The basis of the modern fleet of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation are the bombers Tu-160, Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3
Only two countries — USA and Russia have a strategic (long-range) aviation. Modern strategic aircraft began its history with a squadron of aircraft “Ilya Muromets” — the first in the world connection four-engine heavy bombers. The decision on its establishment on 23 December 1914, approved by Emperor Nicholas II. This date is considered the Day of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation.
The basis of the modern fleet are strategic missile carriers Tu-160 and Tu-95MS, long-range missile-bombers Tu-22M3 bombers, tanker aircraft Il-78 and reconnaissance aircraft Tu-22MR. In 2016 the long-range aircraft performed 17 flights on air patrols in the waters of the Norwegian, North, Black, Japanese sea and Yellow sea in the Western Pacific and northeast Atlantic oceans and in the Arctic zone.
Turboprop strategic bomber-missile carrier. According to NATO classification — «Bear». Designed to destroy nuclear and conventional weapons important goals of the military in remote geographical areas and in the deep rear of continental theaters of military operations. Chief designer Nikolay Bazenkov. The first flight was made in September 1979. Adopted in 1981. The maximum speed is 830 km/h, operational range — up to 10 500 km, practical ceiling — 12000 m. Crew — 7 people.
Tu-95 is one of the fastest turboprops in the world, the first prototypes were able to reach the speed of 940 km/h. In all there were about 500 Tu-95 of various modifications.
According to open sources, currently in service of Aerospace forces of the Russian Federation are of the order of 30 Tu-95MS armed with Navy — about 20 Tu-142 of various modifications. Is being upgraded to version Tu-95МСМ (will extend the life of the aircraft until 2025).
Long-range supersonic missile-bomber with variable geometry wings. Designed to engage supersonic guided missiles for ground and sea targets at any time of day and in all weather conditions.
Chief designer — Dmitry Markov. The first flight was made on 22 June 1977, adopted in March 1989. Was built near 500 Tu-22M different modifications. The maximum speed of the aircraft is 2,300 km/h, practical range is 5500 km, practical ceiling of 13,500 m. Crew — 4 people.
At present the repair and modernization of the planes of this model are conducted. The bombers have been repeatedly used for strikes on terrorist targets in Syria.
Supersonic strategic bomber-a rocket carrier with a changeable geometry of the wing. For white color and graceful flight was the unofficial name of “White Swan”. Intended for the defeat with a nuclear and ordinary weapon of the most essential aims in the remote war geographic areas and in the deep rear of continental war seats.
Chief designer Valentin Bliznyuk. First flying machine made of 18 December 1981, entered service in 1987. The maximum speed of 2230 km/h, practical range — 14 600 km, service ceiling is 16,000 m. Crew — 4 people. Armament: up to 12 cruise missiles, or 40 tons of bombs. Flight duration — up to 15 hours (without refueling).
In 2015 was decision to resume production of bombers in a modernized version of the Tu-160M2 and to postpone the completion of the new generation bomber, the PAK DA at a later date.
