Russian citizen Roman Seleznev, convicted in the US for 27 years in prison for cyber-fraud, called the sentence equivalent to a mortal.
The Federal Court in Seattle (Washington, USA) sentenced Russian citizen Roman Seleznev to 27 years in prison on a cyber-fraud case.
Verdict, according to Seleznev, confirms the fact that he is a political prisoner and a tool for the government. “” This is in no way an equivalent sentence. I was kidnapped by the US, and they know it’s true. Now they want to send a signal to the whole world, using me as a pawn. I respect and understand the need for justice, but today there was no justice. For me, with my wounds and in my physical condition because of a head injury, today’s sentence was mortal, “reads Seleznev’s written statement, read out by his lawyer, Igor Litvak.
The jury in August 2016 recognized the 32-year-old Russian as guilty of five articles and 38 criminal incidents. The prosecution said that Seleznev inflicted damage on 170 million dollars. Prosecutors at the trial argued that Seleznev’s computer, when detained in 2014, found 1.7 million stolen credit card numbers, and nearly three million numbers were stolen.
The case of Seleznev caused a resonance because of the circumstances of his detention: he was captured by agents of the US Secret Service in the Maldives and taken to the United States. Seleznev’s defense, his father, State Duma deputy Valery Seleznev, and the Russian Foreign Ministry called the detention of a Russian kidnapping and violation of international law.
