Japan protested because of Russia’s plans to deploy a division in the Kuril Islands

The Government of Japan has sent through diplomatic channels to protest Moscow after the statements of the Ministry of Defense of Russia Sergey Shoigu on the Kuril Islands, the general secretary of the Japanese government Ёsihide Suga.

“The protest was sent through diplomatic channels 22 and 23 February. Is deplorable if the Russian Armed Forces will strengthen the military presence in the northern territories (as in Japan called the southern Kuril Islands) It is contrary to the position of our country…”, – Said Suga at the press conference .

The first deputy chairman of the Duma Committee for International Affairs Dmitry Novikov noted that the Kuril Islands – a Russian territory, and Moscow has the right to take any measures to protect it.

Russian Defence Minister, said that the agency expects to place in this year’s three divisions on the western and south-western border. In particular, he stressed that “active work on protection of the Kuril Islands,” where “the division should stay with” in this year.

Japan claims to the South Kuril Islands – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai archipelago. The transfer of these islands to it, Japan has set a condition of signing a peace treaty with Russia, which at the end of the Second World War and was not signed. Moscow’s position is that the southern Kuril Islands became part of the Soviet Union following the Second World War and the Russian sovereignty over them has a corresponding international legal formalization.
