Siberian State Aerospace University named After Academician M.F. Reshetnev (SibSAU) a unique technology of the 3d Print with wax is developed for the use in foundry

Scientists of the Institute of Space Technology SibSAU. M.F. Reshetnev – the support university of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, developed a new technology of 3D wax printing, which can replace the traditional technology of making melted models in foundries both in large industrial enterprises and in private workshops.

The developed modified printing technology opens up huge opportunities for manufacturing cast metal parts literally at home.

This technology, based on FDM-printing technology (layered fusing of a material), in contrast to the classical technology that uses expensive materials (silicone, ceramics, etc.) allows us to use cheap consumables. For example, cast refractory wax. “Moreover, this wax can be of such low quality that it can include solid particles with a size of 0.1 to 0.3 mm,” says the Project Manager, Associate Professor of the Department of “Engines of Aircraft”, head of the “Impulse” Bureau of the Institute of Space Technology SibSAU them. M.F. Reshetnev Maxim Kubrikov, – we can even use ordinary paraffin, from which candles are made.”

The introduction of the modified technology will make it possible to reduce the cost of foundry production without loss of quality, and even improve it, since the new technology implies obtaining a high-precision casting model with an accuracy of 0.05 mm. Then, as with traditional 3D printing, plastic shrinkage occurs at the end of work (at the time of printing, the plastic is very hot and decreases in size when it cools down).

“Plus, in the model produced by the traditional method of 3D printing”, says Maxim Kubrikov, “the “step effect” is clearly pronounced (the boundary between the layers is visible), when obtaining a wax model by industrial methods, it is not possible to obtain a complex internal geometry. In the wax model, made in a new way, the “step effect” is minimized, the new technology allows almost completely to get rid of such a defect as the ribbed surface, and there are no difficulties in obtaining complex internal geometry”.

It is necessary to note one of the main advantages of the new technology – shortening the time of manufacturing of wax models. If the classical method is a complex process that can take several months, the modified method allows you to get high-precision wax patterns in a few hours.

At present, laboratory studies of unique technology of 3D printing wax have been completed. The next stage is the introduction of technology at industrial enterprises of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, access to the Russian and world markets.
